Public Speaking - 5 Tips for Getting Past the Ums And Ahs So Your Message Gets Through Loud & Clear

Public speaking is a powerful way for a solo professional or small business owner to market your business. So is presenting teleseminars. But what happens when you get stuck saying too many ums and ahs? Should you quit speaking in favor of other marketing methods? Here is an actual panicked message I received from a client followed by my response:

"Help! I just listened to myself speak on a recording and I had to stop it within a minute. The Ummmss and Ahhhss were horrendous -- 4 or 5 within that time frame! I plan to conduct many teleseminars and do public speaking and this just has to stop now."

Here are the top 5 most effective ways to get past the ums so your message comes through loud and clear:

Public Speaking - 5 Tips for Getting Past the Ums And Ahs So Your Message Gets Through Loud & Clear

1.Practice Out Loud

If you have a tendency to um and uh, the reason is often because you have an idea of what you want to say next, but you're not totally certain. So you insert a verbal filler to fill the space while you figure out the next word. Practicing out loud will get you to the point where you are completely comfortable with what you're saying, and therefore not have the need to um or uh (or at least greatly reduce it). If you plan on delivering the same material multiple times, you'll have to practice much less often as you gain more experience. If you can, record yourself while practicing so you can hear where you tend to um and uh the most.

2. Work From Detailed Notes and Not a Script

You'd think a word-for-word script would make it easier to stop the ums... and it can. But only if you have experience making a script sound natural. Otherwise you'll sound like you're reading. That's the opposite extreme of um and uh and sounds just as bad.

3. Be Aware

This is important. Many people have no idea they rely on verbal pauses or disfluencies until they hear themselves on a recording. The first step in overcoming from any addiction is to recognize and acknowledge you have one. And truly, people who say um and uh too much are addicted to their crutch words. Simply knowing you make this mistake will get you that much closer to stopping it.

4. Pay Attention

Listen to yourself as you present your speech or teleseminar. Do not think about anything else other than what you are saying, how you are saying it and your audience: IN THAT MOMENT. People will um and uh when they are distracted from their planned comments. For example, while on a teleseminar, shut down your email and other instant message features so you won't be visually interrupted (sometimes just the sound of those things can distract you enough to trigger an um.) Don't try to multi-task while leading a call or doing any type of presentation.

5. Connect with Your Audience

Here's a fun test to do the next time you're practicing with a friend: try to say um while making direct eye contact. It's nearly impossible. Why? Because you're having a conversation and um isn't a word. Um doesn't fit and doesn't make sense. While you're having a 1:1 conversation, you would likely avoid um and uh. Make your presentations much more conversational and your um and uh will disappear.

Is it crucial to get rid of all the ums and uhs? Experts disagree, but in my decades of experience as a speaker, audience member, and instructor, I haven't thought less of a speaker who had outstanding content with an occasional um or uh. You don't have to eliminate every um and uh when the rest of your message is solid. The time to get concerned is when your audience is listening for your next um instead of paying attention to your message. So fix what you can, give yourself a break, and um, keep on public speaking.

Spiritual Bypass or Breakthrough - Three Keys for Practical Spiritual Transformation

Longing to Know our Divine Essence

Whether we consciously recognize it or not, from my perspective, we are all called to a greater awakening into Spirit, into the awareness of being part of the great presence of God, the creative Intelligence behind all universes. We long to know our connection, our oneness with that Divinity.

Human Experience Doesn't Always Line Up with Spiritual

Spiritual Bypass or Breakthrough - Three Keys for Practical Spiritual Transformation

At the same time, we live in a very material, very human world. We make choices and have experiences that don't always line up with spiritual reality.

Bypass or Breakthrough?

In counseling with people who are on a spiritual path, I've found two distinct approaches to dealing with human experiences that might block our greater experience of the Divine, not to mention blocking greater happiness and success in daily living.

Perhaps because we don't know there is a more effective approach, some of us habitually choose a spiritual by-pass. That's when we have an inner challenge and instead of going deeply within, facing the discomfort, and doing the work required to resolve the issue or heal the hurt, we say some positive words and pretend or hope the issue will go away.

Sometimes we choose the spiritual bypass because of fear of what we would have to face inwardly -- shame, guilt, judgments, negative self-perceptions, the pain of old wounds. We skate around the issue, tell ourselves it's okay, repeat a few positive statements, but inwardly something still goes, "Clunk."

Practical Spiritual Breakthroughs

Some of us have learned how to create consistent practical spiritual breakthroughs. That's when we do actually acknowledge, lovingly confront and embrace the issues that demand attention. In so doing, we release them, creating an opening for greater awareness of our own Divine Essence -- our own peace, loving, truth, joy, harmony, upliftment and Light. A remarkable author and teacher, John-Roger, has said repeatedly that It takes great courage to see the face of God because first you have to look at your own.

Many times we have to address these inner challenges over and over, gently chipping away chunks of the "icebergs" in our unconscious. Or we can think of it as peeling an onion. We get a breakthrough, experience more peace and loving, but a few months later the issue comes around again and we get to explore and break through to a deeper level.

How to Create Your Own Practical Spiritual Breakthroughs

How can you create more of these practical spiritual breakthroughs, clearing space to connect with your Divine Essence more often and more completely?

Go for the deeper work available in your own challenging situations. If necessary, get some short term counseling support from someone who understands these processes and has done their own deep work for spiritual growth.

Three Keys for Transformation

Here are three simple keys you can apply within your own quest for spiritual breakthroughs.

1) Accept what is.

Look deeply and dare to see it for what it is. Affirm, "I am willing to see this clearly."

2) Love all of yourself,

Even the parts of you that don't seem to cooperate. Consciously apply loving to each seemingly negative aspect and allow it to transform itself. Dialogue with caring and appreciation for whatever that aspect is teaching you. Say, "I love you. I'm listening. Is there anything you want to say to me now?"

3) Forgive yourself

As often as necessary for your consciousness to shift from judgment to acceptance and loving. Say, "I forgive myself for judging myself as . . . (a quality like stupid) or for . . . (doing or thinking or saying whatever it was)."

5 Ideas to Promote Your Charity Or Non Profit Organisation

Charity organisations and events are amazing ways of raising money for worthy causes, but what about the up-front costs of advertising and promotion? You're likely not going to have a lot of money to work with so competing on the same playing fields as companies with money to burn is unlikely to gain you any notice. You need to put your promotion efforts where people are going to see them with minimal money spent but an air of authenticity. To help you get a good turnout and get noticed, here's 5 ideas for promoting your charity or non-profit organisation:

Branding. It may seem odd to attach a corporate identity to a charity, but it is a must in the consumer culture of today. Your brand and your logo must be immediately identifiable to the people you wish to target. Spending money on poster printing and business cards without your brand attached will leave you looking unprofessional. An authentic brand means an authentic company in the eyes of the public. Website. This is going to be one of the best ways that you can interact with people. With a website you are able to clearly state your organisations goals, efforts and achievements. A blog is also a good idea. With this you are able to promote any events or important current events that relate to your cause. Social networking sites. Many charity organisations don't have the money or skills to set up a proper website. The best option for a web presence is to use free blogs and social networking sites. These can either work as satellites to your main website (if you can indeed afford one) or as a simple tool to inform interested parties of your concerns and campaigns. Don't forget to make sure you're active and responsive! Print media. Brochure, poster and booklet printing are the most effective ways to physically inform people. Giving them something to physically hold and read, especially if printed professionally, will lend authenticity to your cause and make people pay attention. Public arena. Find out when and where markets are held and try and organise a stall. The organisers may offer you a discount if you're a charity. Print stickers and give them out, make posters informing people about your charity and it's ultimate goals and where they can donate if they would like. University orientation weeks are a great place to hold an information stall. This is also a chance to do some fundraising such as a sausage sizzle. Or perhaps offer something trivial or novelty in exchange for people signing up for your newsletter.

Remember that you're asking people to care about something that will not necessarily offer them any immediate rewards, a hard sell in today's world. Having your brand in order and knowing how to get your voice heard amidst everyone else's is the difference between a successful charity and an ineffectual one.
